No Country For Old Men- Opening Scenes
At the start the scenes begin off with a small slideshow of backgrounds of what would seem like a desert in a western world, we're given a voiceover of Sheriff Bell speaking with his typical western accent and when we see another sheriff arresting Chigurh the overall appearance/first impression of the film seems of a typical western film which typically contain, sheriffs, cowboys, villains, etc.
After Chigurh is arrested he is taken to the station where the sheriff is talking on the phone, we don't get a close-up of Chigurh or anything in particular to make the audience think that he's a main character, we just watch him strangle that sheriff with his handcuffs, towards the end of the opening scene Chigurh kills an old man with a weapon that is used to kill cows. This tells us a bit about Chigurh and how he feels about other humans, he sees them as if they're animals. In this scene we do get a slight close-up and we can see what he looks like properly, he is pale, his clothing doesn't match the typical western genre and he just doesn't match the background. He looks like he's from out of nowhere.
We can't learn much about Chigurh, from what we see we just learn that he is a killer that has no remorse and will kill anyone without second-thoughts, the camera usage on him is off, we don't get any solid close-ups of him, and when we do they're tilted at a 90 degree angle, which is different because it's avoiding alignment with Chigurh.
On the other hand we are given alignment with Sheriff Bell as we hear him in the voiceover, we learn that he had a grandfather that would be proud about him being a sheriff, he also doesn't stop talking about the past and "old-timers" which shows us alot that he likes talking about time, gives us this sense of past vs future , which we could assume that Chigurh could be from the future as his odd appearance and odd way of killing doesn't match the timeline western scene he's in.
