Shaun of the Dead - Narrative Resolution

Shaun of the dead goes from being this rom-com type of film, to this apocalyptic zombie chaos. At the start we see Shaun still acting childish with his best friend Ed as if they're still college students. Throughout the film the narrative enigma is unrestricted where the audience knows more than the actual protagonist of the film, we are given foreshadowing right at the opening scene with Shaun's zombie-like yawn, which is also repeated again at the end scene of the film. Whilst Shaun goes on about his day we see stuff going on in the background that Shaun is too oblivious to realise.

Shaun starts to act up on himself and give himself goals when the film has completely transformed into a zombie apocalypse, in which Shaun has to begin adapting to and so does his relationships with his family, friends and love. These relationships begin shifting, a key scene that shows this would be the car scene when they're driving his friends and family to the pub, however Philip who is Shaun's step father is about to die begins telling Shaun that he loves him and Shaun fixes their relationship, once that was solved Philip turns into a zombie which led to having to leave him in the car locked.

Shaun's friendship with Ed was always good, however Ed was a sluggish person who was kind of just leeching off Shaun and living with him rent-free. Shaun was too busy defending him and never realised that Ed had a problem. This is however fixed after the film has shifted into a zombie apocalypse when they're at the entrance of the pub surrounded by zombies and Ed gets a call which attracted all the zombies towards them, Shaun stands up for himself and tells Ed to stop messing around. And this hits Ed which makes him kind of mature a bit because after that, towards the end scene Ed sacrifices himself to let Shaun and Liz escape since he holds them back.

Lastly, Shaun's relationship with Liz, his girlfriend who breaks up with him at the start of the film also changes when the film shifts into a zombie apocalypse. Throughout the changes of Shaun where he begins taking an initiative more and starts being more determined, we also see Liz realising Shaun is changing towards a positive outcome and their relationship starts getting closer, when Liz broke up with Shaun she told him that he couldn't even give up anything, when the film shifted into an apocalypse Shaun starts being more healthy by grabbing a diet coke instead of a normal coke, these little changes show how the shifting of the film genre changes Shaun and his relationships.
