Captain Fantastic- Issues and Ideologies
One major issue that has been brought up in Captain Fantastic is how Ben has never sent his children to school. This was brought to his sisters' attention as she said that his kids aren't learning anything since they're not going to school. He argues that the school doesn't teach essential stuff like survival in forests, etc. He proves his sister wrong by showing how his young daughter, Zaja and she answers the question Ben asked to both his nephews whom are older. This shows how even when his kids aren't going to school they still are learning a lot and know stuff that even kids who go to school don't know.
A way they use film form to show encourage these points is the use of hand-held camera shots and close up camera, this displays the clear emotions that each character is showing, from the nephews' unbothered faces, to Ben's sister disproved attitude, the use of hand-held camera also provides a scent of a more welcoming/naturalistic type since all the characters are inside a warm house rather than the cold rainforests.
Secondly, a political ideology that was brought up in this film was Marxism, Trotskyism and Maoism. These are all communist ideologies and all argued how the socialist society is far better than the majority of the popularity whom are capitalist. In this scene we are shown how much Ben's son, Bo knows about political ideologies, and that he himself is a Maoist and supports Maoism.
During most of the film we're on Ben's side in terms of how he has brought up his children, etc. However when Jack (the grandfather) is introduced we just think that he dislikes Ben and just goes against him because he hates him or something. However later on in the film Jack brings the audience to reality, he makes us thoroughly analyse how Ben brought his children up in a rainforest as if they're part of a tribe or as if they're animals, Jack brings sense into the audience and kind of separates the views each person watching the film, whether they agree or not.
Lastly, when Ben and Jack are discussing, the scene shows Ben doing a lot of explaining and sort of far away, this portrays the distant relationship Ben and Jack have with each other even though they're basically family considering Ben was married to his daughter, during this scene we see Ben stumble in his words, knowing that he was disproved and that Jack made a valid point.
